Northampton Heritage Residence

Heritage Listed “Northampton” Villa

Northampton is a large bay-fronted bluestone villa on Town Acre 935. It was designed and built late 1884 – 1885 by local prominent builder, James Odlum. He and his brother Michael bought many vacant lots in North Adelaide in the late nineteenth century and built properties for the middle-class rental market. This Adelaide villa is an excellent example of the prevailing architectural trend of the period and displays decorative and ornamental details both externally and internally.

Heritage Reconstruction Work

Northampton House Progressive Heritage Reconstruction Work

Reconstruction work performed by specialist painters Adelaide, Lancaster Painters Australia, inside this heritage listed private residence. It included professional repaint and decoration. Hand painted decorative finishes included washes, stencils, gilding (gold leaf), decorative ceiling roses and marbleised cornices. Watch the Master Builders Association “Building Ideas” show segment below for filmage of the completed work.

Gary Lancaster along with Geoff Turner have completed the first stage of an internal repaint of our Villa and are now undertaking the second stage. Initially we had decided that we would continue with our long-standing habit of having the walls and ceilings in various shades of stone and cream. However Gary and Geoffrey offered creative suggestions and painted samples of their suggestions on our wall and ceilings so that we could clearly visualize their suggestions. The result is that our home is beautifully decorated maintaining our desire for a light and open ambience but at the same time reflecting the heritage of our home.

We were delighted by the following qualities that these craftsmen exhibited. They were punctual and started on time and completed the job within their estimated finishing time. They were polite, cheerful and helpful and worked well with other tradesmen. As our floors were being sanded and polished at the same time there was a need to co-ordinate with other tradesmen, this they did quite happily and so made the renovation experience much less stressful. Gary was always available for discussion and we were able to communicate easily. Further they were clean and tidy in their work methods, which made living in the chaos of renovation easier than expected.

Both Gary and Geoff displayed an enthusiasm and commitment to achieving an excellent quality of work. Their knowledge and skill and understanding of the many different painting methods and finishes has opened our eyes to what can be achieved by skilled artisans.
